"SEO is dead" is lazy groupthink. Read on for my take on how you can STILL get tons of value out of organic search and how it works great in tandem with dark social.

SEO in 2024 is... confusing

For one, it’s always been a bit of a mystery for anyone who doesn’t focus on it. You know it’s important and it can be a super valuable marketing channel, but you don’t know exactly how it works. And this means you have to trust other people to do it for you and do it well – even though you’re not sure how to assess their impact on actual business outcomes.

Meanwhile SEO is getting even more confusing in the age of AI. Both because of how people use AI to generate content and because of how Google search itself is changing. And it’s certainly true that there are increasing risks in SEO. But that doesn’t mean it’s dead.

"SEO is dead" is lazy groupthink

You’ve probably heard “SEO is dead” a lot. Often from people who are trying to sell you a  product/service/worldview that relies on one particular marketing channel. Or from people who simply have a bias against old tactics. But show us a strategic, systems-thinking, unbiased, intellectually honest marketer who believes SEO is actually dead.

Dark social is very real. That doesn't mean SEO is dead.

Imagine this:

  1. You sell financial analysis software to enterprises.
  2. A VP of Finance at Acme finds an insightful LinkedIn post or podcast interview w/ your CEO. She Slacks it to her team saying “we gotta learn from this guy”.
  3. A member of her team later Googles “how to forecast revenue in SaaS”. An article from your company sits at result #3. Because they remember the name of your company from your CEO’s content, they click on your article instead of the other options.
  4. Your article does a great job explaining revenue forecasting, so they sign up for your email newsletter.
  5. Three months later they click a button in the newsletter to book a demo, and you’re off to the races 🎉

SEO is not dead. It's more competitive, which means you need a more refined approach.

The true change we’re seeing is just that SEO is more competitive. It’s more competitive because:

  1. many companies have now been working on it for 10, 20, 30 years, and
  2. more Google searches result in questions being answered via snippets and AI Overviews.
But more competitive does not equal dead. It just means you need a more refined approach.

Let's be specific: SEO needs to drive revenue.

If you’re an agency trying to retain your clients or a GTM leader picking channels to focus on, your job is to drive revenue. That means you cannot afford marketing tactics that produce vanity metrics. Traffic just ain’t it.

But traffic… from your ICP… to content they like… that convinces them to opt in to further communication… which builds trust and generates interest in your solution… that IS it.

What can SEO do for you?

✋ Opted-In Audience: unlike ads or cold email, searchers have signaled that they're looking for something. Now make sure they find your solution!

💲 High ROI: produce great content once and it'll bring you revenue for years to come.

💙 Brand Trust: SEO gets you eyeballs, which gives you the opportunity to impress readers with helpful, insightful, targeted information that will make them trust your brand.

⚔️ Competitive Edge: if you don't do it, someone else will.

That’s how SEO will drive revenue in 2025. And that’s what we do.

What we do.

Search to Sale will help you:

  • Map the entire keyword space for your industry and rank these keywords to elevate the ones that are high intent and winnable for you.
  • Group your target keywords into clusters, so you can plan content around topics, not terms.
  • Programmatically monitor all your content.
  • Think about SEO like a CFO. That means measuring success based on engagement and conversion, not just traffic.
  • Figure out which existing content needs to be optimized, and when to focus on traffic vs engagement vs conversion.
  • Target the top 3 positions in Google because they’re most likely to get clicks (duh) and get cited by generative AI. This is how we future-proof your content.

Integrations

Content marketers typically have to split their time between Ahrefs (or SEMrush or Moz), Google Analytics, Google Search Console, and marketing software like HubSpot. And it's really tough to tell a story about the full funnel.

Do you know which keywords drive revenue for your business?

We solved this problem by blending data from all these sources, making that 360-degree data available to you, and building reports to simplify the data down to the most important priorities.

Proven Results

“The SEO teams I’ve worked with have only ever shown me tables of data. I have never seen someone break that down into real content recommendations.”
